Why You Should Start a T-shirt Business to Raise Cultural Awareness

There’s something inside of me that wants to be comfortable in and around different groups of people. I have a fear of being misunderstood because of my lack of knowledge with different cultures. So, I make an effort to understand others from all walks of life when I get the opportunity. I’ve witnessed several misunderstandings in regards to my culture because someone didn’t know anything outside of theirs. This is very common and easy to do (only know your culture), but it creates confusion and sometimes horrible experiences. That’s why culture awareness is vital for everyone.

Because of the differences in living environments, beliefs and values, it is crucial to know or cultural understand how to coexist around others who don’t look, act, or believe as you do. It is imperative to know other cultures and their practices and/or beliefs so you can coexist with them or avoid them altogether.

You don’t have to agree with the way anyone lives or thinks, but by understanding a little more about them, you’d be able to be in the same location without chaos (in most cases). As you travel, being culturally aware can be a great assistance too and enhance your experience away from home.

While I stress the importance of learning outside of what you know and belief, I encourage you to teach others about your lifestyle and practices as well. There are many ways to expose others to your culture and one of those ways is to print powerful words and/or statements on things you wear. There are a ton of people who create and sell products such as t-shirts and you can too! Some have their own printing machine. Others use third-party printing and shipping companies such as Printful. Teaching with apparel, accessories, and drink-ware is a great way to have a voice and earn extra cash while doing so.

I’ve noticed companies, like Served Fresh and Girl CEO, that are making waves because they create with intention. Served Fresh is more geared towards cultural awareness in the black community while Girl CEO provides feminist apparel, stationery, and digital products for the benefit of women in business.

Both help its customers express their social stance, self-love and community awareness. It’s a simple business model with clear evidence of impact. Don’t reinvent the wheel; create your own lane with this business model and make waves!

Selling t-shirts is a low start-up cost business that is beneficial for many people, including you. Here’s why:

Speak your truth and help others speak theirs

Speaking your truth means to stand for the things you passionately believe in. It means not settling for less than what you know you deserve as a human. Others may not agree on the same topics as you, but your voice still matters. Helping your tribe (the people who will gravitate towards your brand) communicate their thoughts and feelings by wearing your t-shirts and products is a great way to help them speak their truth.

Your t-shirt company doesn’t have to be political, religious, or racial. You can use your company to raise awareness for your beliefs whether or not you stick to your culture or a particular social group (business, childcare, non-profit organizations, beauty, arts, etc.).

Community outreach

Your t-shirt company can contribute to more than fashion and streetwear. It can contribute to community outreach programs locally and globally. Community outreach is important because of the message it sends to our youth and elders. Younger people who are affected will have hope in either starting something that makes a difference similar to your business, or they’ll learn how to flourish within their community in a positive way using their voice. Elders will benefit from the things that are provided for them through programs that are available for living improvements.

What does this have to do with your t-shirt company? So glad you asked…

Much of the money that you make will be recycled back into the economy which is a great thing as it keeps other people in business such as the companies you’ll partner with. Those partners may be apart of non-organizations that assist the groups of people mentioned above. See how that works?

You could take your business a step further by donating to organizations that you believe can make a difference in the areas you’d like to see a change in. Think of organizations that help with cancer, lupus, and other detrimental diseases. Your business can get involved! You can also donate to companies that are making a difference right in your community like shelters for women and children, or places to help men get back on their feet.

Make your company meaningful. It’s deeper than t-shirts

Additional income for yourself

Additional income is something everyone can appreciate and use. Creating new streams of income can change your entire living situation, responsibly managed of course. As mentioned before, some of the money will be recycled back into the economy which will help your business thrive.

Not only is this idea lucrative, but it is also impactful!

By the way, you don’t have to limit yourself to t-shirts. A company called Printful gives you so many options such as backpacks, coffee mugs, shower curtains, pillows, and more!. It does much of the “leg work” of printing and shipping. It’s simple to get started. Create the designs and they’ll print and ship orders out for you!
